Sony: We Can't Make More Movies Thanks to Piracy
Download Sony: We Can't Make More Movies Thanks to Piracy at High Speed

Pirating and downloading movies means studios can't make more, Sony claims.

Sony plans to release the upcoming film Michael Jackson's This Is It in every country tomorrow. The company said that--based on the multitudes of Jackson fans--it wouldn't make sense to distribute the film any differently. However, the company also has a secret motive concerning the film: piracy. If the movie premiered in the States first, by Thursday it would be "cammed" and distributed via BitTorrent and peer-to-peer networks.

While that will still be the case, whether the movie opens locally or world-wide, Michael Lynton, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, said that smaller movie companies that generate independent films can't afford to open globally. "When such movies are stolen, it hurts their chances of building an international audience--robbing film-makers of entire markets where stolen versions of their work have proliferated online," he said in an online blog via Times Online.

His personal statement can't be confused with anything else other than a message to those who pirate or watch pirated movies. He clearly states that online theft siphons billions of dollars out of the industry, dollars that could have been obtained had those individuals who watched pirated movies went to the theater instead. Without those funds, there's less money to make movies. Lynton even threw in a few numbers, indicating that top movie studios made 162 films: over 40 less than the number filmed in 2006, and the lowest number in a decade.

"Making a movie takes lots of money and years of effort, and always involves a huge amount of risk," he said. "Film-makers are making a big bet that the story they are telling will appeal to large audiences two or three years down the road. That comes with the territory, but rampant piracy is an additional risk that we shouldn’t have to absorb."

BOO HOO, i can not remember the last time i went to theater and watched a movie so that argument is mute for me. if the movie is good enough i rent it and watch it that way thus avoiding those annoying assholes at theaters who can not shut up and watch the movie

have to agree if we had to pay to watch every piece of crap movie they throw out, they would just start giving you a bolank disc and charging you $20 for the lucky dip movie selection.
If I think a movie is worth watching I buy it when I have the cash even if I download it makes very little difference to how much money I actually spend on movies.

totally agree with the others: if a movie is worth it, IΒ΄ll watc it or even buy the DVD....actually itΒ΄s a long time ago IΒ΄ve been to cinema or bought a dvd with some new movies...I wonΒ΄t pay for crap either

LOL not everyone who wants to watch movies can physically go to theaters. Their stats are screwed--They count your dog, cat, infant, maid and mistress etc. Bottom line if the movie is worth it, we support it in some other way that still makes them enough money to make a new one.

I too agree. if i get a crap cam version and like the film I'll buy it even if a DVD rip came out. the price of the cinema here is expensive so I don't go anymore

AGREE. I can't take my family to see movies. It costs me $65 to $80 just to go see a movie. That is because of ticket prices and snack prices are Insane. Most of the movies are garbage, not very good. I have been robbed, not the movie industry and theater industry, they have robbed me!!!!!

With the above said, I will not buy a DVD or Blu Ray for more than $10 at the club store. SONY If it isn't $10 forget it.

How about you get inline with the economy SONY and stop making your own, who do you think you are EXXON-MOBIL.

That's another good conversation.

When sony will sell disguisting and expensive yoghurts, are they going to make us believe that people are downloading too many of them ? :)

Why, when s.o sell expensive shit, does he believe we are going to bend and take down our pants ????

I didn't see any lack of profit.......that's bullshit.
They win millions with each movie, but they are greedy, they want more and more profit.

Why don't they also stop to make playstation games?
Because, even with piracy, they win millions.

Film companies should better keep this a secret, openly taking about piracy will only entice others who never were into it to actually download it. Reverse publishing I guess.

When you think that some actors make over USD$20 million for one movie, maybe pirating is just a reality check for everyone.

A movie, entertainment, nothing more costing $200 million???

And yet people are still dying from famine and unhygienic conditions.

Oh and what about that extremely disengenous heart for the independant movie makers, you know those guys that had to live of scraps from the big boys..they couldnt put their product out at all.. But things have changed now..they may make not more money but at least their movies get seen, and that in the end is what its all about for an artist.. in fact they start to compete with the shite big media multinational monopolists were releasing, and now the accountants and their shrinks-the lawyers start screaming help help were being robbed..and i say kill the dinosaurs.

Maybe they should start with the Expense of paying astonishingly high salaries to everyone involved in making the film. Actors have been getting paid way too much for so long now its common place to pay the next best actor to win a Logie much much more than they are worth. I agree with everyone above although I didn't get time to read all (sorry) but from what I read it is true. I myself haven't been to a cinema in a long time due to personal problems and before that I really hated paying top dollar to go and see a movie that is such crap it should never have been picked up off the cutting floor in the first place. Too many to mention. I have bought sets like Leathal Weapon

I feel sick whenever I hear those CEO or whatever from studios saying such craps.
Come on, the movie is about Michael Jackson, even IF it got pirated, a lot of people will still go to cinema!
Besides.. here's something to think about.. doesn't anyone think that Sony is taking too much advantage of the dead of Michael Jackson? To me, what Sony doing toward Jackso is not any different than a grave digger.

@somius : Good point (About PS games). Now without piracy (PS3), it actually hurt the sales of their hardware.. lol

@djmike : I agree, that's a good idea. I think we really should make a donation for those movie companies that kept complaining about their garbage getting pirated, and show them the power of the people, real, smart, thinking human, not the way they see it (as stupid, gullible automatons that would shell $$$ to watch garbage)

Lastly.... there's always independent movies. Many great directors actually came from indie world anyway. So there.. Sony :P

Lost of movies from 2002 to present is verry low, too much FX effects ,low scenario and bad actors. I see more and more horror movies with terrifiant bloddy action, verry low script. Message for Directors and Studios: More suprising and new aideas, god actors (old and new ofcorse) and low computer generatin effects. If i want to see that, i play new games.
